Grammar

I parsed the same sentence in dozens of languages so you can understand the language structure and grammar better. It might help you to learn the/multiple language(s)!

Parsed by word typePersonal pronounn (object) verb noun. Conjunction personal pronoun (object) verb [to+ infinitive verb} personal pronoun (subject) relative clause noun verb adverb.

Analysis of multiple language structures

To make it easier to recognise the words in multiple languages from various language families, I coloured each word the same as its corresponding translation. All grammatical word types are shown in the same colour. I repeated the English source sentence each time so you have them together on one screen. It’s an ongoing project, so bare with me for a bit 😉 For now, I’m adding languages from the Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Hellenic, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Japonic and Bantu language families. I’ll add Baltic and Persian-Aryan, various Creole and other languages each with their colouring for parsing and analyses of word order soon, during another rainy week!

English word structure compared to German
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
GermanIch liebe Sprachen. Und ich möchte dich zeigen warum Sprachen interessant sind.

When comparing English to German you can tell the sentence structure is almost the same. Only in the second sentence ‘to show you’ is reversed: ‘dich zeigen’. The same occurs at the end: ‘are interesting’ becomes ‘interessant sind’. A similar word pattern occurs in Frisian, Dutch and Yiddish.

Compare English to Frisian sentence structure
Risultato immagine per britse amerikaanse vlagEnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
Friese Vlag, Vlag Provincie Friesland 90 X 150
Frisian
Ik hâld fan talen. En ik wol jo sjen lite wêrom talen ynteressant binne.
Being a Germanic language, Frisian has an SVO-order, just like English.
Compare English to Dutch sentence structure
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
DutchIk houd van* talen. En ik wil je laten zien** waarom talen interessant zijn***.

*The verb ‘to love‘ in English is ‘houden van‘ in Dutch.
**The verb ‘to show’ in Dutch is ‘laten zien’, literally ‘let see’
***the rest of the verbal phrase comes at the end in Dutch (and German) sentences

Compare English to Yiddish
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
Yiddish
(Hebrew alphabet)
איך האָב ליב שפראַכן. און איך וויל אייך ווייזן פארוואס שפראכן זענען אינטערעסאנט.
Yiddish (Romanised)Ikh hob lieb shprakh. Aun ikh vil eykh veyzn farvas sphrakhn zenen interessant.
The word order of English and Yiddish are almost identical in this sentence. ‘I want to show you’ is just swapped: ‘I want to you (obj) show’
Compare English to Mandarin Chinese
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
traditional Chinese喜歡語言告訴為什麼語言有趣
simplified Chinese喜欢语言告诉为什么语言有趣
pinyin xǐhuān yǔyán. xiǎng gàosù wèishéme yǔyán hěn yǒuqù.
literal translationI love languages (language+word). I want show you why languages very have interest.

In Chinese, both sentences again start with the subject ‘I‘,
followed by the verbal phrase ‘love’ and ‘like to show’
plus the rest: in the first sentence the object ‘languages’
and in the second sentence: ‘you languages very interesting’

Compare English to Swahili
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
SwahiliNakupenda lugha. Na ninataka kukuonyesha kwa nini lugha zinavutia.
literal translationI+love languages. And I+want to+you+show what for languages are+interesting.

Swahili is an agglutinative language. Morphemes like ‘I‘ and ‘love’ are glued together to form words. Read more on Swahili grammar on Wikipedia.

Compare English to Russian
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
Russian (Cyrillic alphabet)Я люблю языки. И я хочу показать вам, чем
[…] интересны языки.
Russian (Romanization)Ya lyublyu yazyki. I ya khochu pokazat’ vam, chem interesny yazyki.
literal translationI love languages. And I want learn you, why interesting languages.

As you can see the word ‘are’ can be ommited in Russian.

Compare English to Latin languages, s.a. Spanish, Catalan and Galician
EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
SpanishMe encantan los idiomas. Y (yo) quiero mostrarte por qué los idiomas son interesantes.

I love/really like that‘ or ‘A loves B’ as in ‘I love languages’ in these Romance languages such as Spanish, Catalan and Galician is often expressed as something like ‘A pleases me’ or when maintaining the same word order ‘to me pleases A’ or in this case ‘to me please languages’ as can be seen in the above sentences. This verb in these Romance languages requires the grammatical subject (in bold) and object (in italic) to be inverted. Alternatively, one could say in Spanish ‘Amo los idiomas.’ That way you build the sentence using the same word order as in the other languages. But ‘me encantan los idiomas’ is used more often. A form of ‘amar’, ‘to love’ is typically used in ‘te amo’, i.e. ‘I love you’.

Japanese sentence broken up in parts and compared to English

EnglishI love languages. And I want to show you why languages are interesting.
Japanese言語大好きそしてなぜ言語面白いかをお話ししたいと思います
Japanese (Romanized)Watashi wa gengoga daisukide. (Soshite) naze gengoga omoshiroi no ka o ohanashi shitai to omoimasu.

Japanese uses particles. As in all above sentences, the word ‘I‘ or ‘watashi‘ in Japanese is marked blue.

Being the topic of the sentence ‘watashi’ is followed by the topic marker ‘wa’ in lighter blue.

Being the subject of the sentence, ‘gengo(language) is followed by the subject marker が (ga) in lighter green. It answers the question ‘What do I like?’ – languages. Read more on the particle が (ga).

‘大好き’ is the verb ‘to really like’ or ‘to love’.

or ‘de’ functions as the word ‘and’ in English.
